TANZANIA URGES ITS CITIZENS LIVING IN THE UNITED STATES TO COMPLY WITH VISA CONDITIONS

The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania has urged all Tanzanians travelling to and residing in the United States to strictly comply with the conditions of their visas, noting that failure to do so is the main reason Tanzania has been placed under partial restrictions and entry limitations by the United States.

According to an official statement released today, December 17, 2025, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, the Government of the United States has announced the inclusion of Tanzania among countries subject to partial entry restrictions. The decision was officially announced by U.S. President Donald Trump through his social media platforms on December 16, 2025.

However, the U.S. Government has clarified that the restrictions are not total, and that Tanzanians who meet the required immigration criteria and conditions will continue to be allowed entry into the United States, in accordance with established procedures and assessment mechanisms.

Tanzania has explained that the decision was prompted by a high number of Tanzanian nationals travelling to the United States who fail to comply with their visa conditions, particularly by overstaying beyond the legally authorized period. The Overstay Report indicates that the rate of Tanzanians remaining in the United States in violation of visa conditions has exceeded the threshold acceptable under U.S. immigration policies.

“The report shows that Tanzania has recorded an overstay rate of 8.3 percent for all B-1/B-2 visas (business and tourist visas), and 13.97 percent for F, M and J category visas, which include student visas, vocational training visas, and exchange programme visas,” the statement said.
These figures have been described as significantly higher than the permissible standard, leading to Tanzania’s inclusion on the list of countries subject to the restrictions.

Alongside Tanzania, other countries affected by the measure include Angola, Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon, The Gambia, Malawi, Mauritania, Nigeria, Senegal, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The Government of Tanzania further stated that it has already initiated, and will continue to engage in, diplomatic discussions with the Government of the United States through the respective Ministries of Foreign Affairs, with the aim of finding a swift and lasting solution to have Tanzania removed from the restriction list.

As these efforts continue, the Government has called upon all Tanzanians travelling to the United States to strictly observe the conditions of their visas, including departing the country immediately upon the expiry of their authorized stay, in order to prevent further negative implications on the country’s standing and to support the removal of the restrictions.
