GST Promotes Mount Mautia as a Premier Geotourism Destination

By Okuly Julius | OKULY BLOG | Kongwa, Dodoma

As the world increasingly seeks unique natural wonders and Earth's geological history, Tanzania continues to establish itself as a premier destination for geological tourism, with Mount Mautia in Kongwa District, Dodoma Region, standing out as one of the world's most remarkable geological sites. The mountain is renowned for hosting Yoderite, a rare mineral that was first discovered in Tanzania and remained exclusive to the country for decades.

Speaking to journalists during a media tour of Mount Mautia on June 30, 2026, the Geological Manager at the Geological Survey of Tanzania (GST), Maswi Solomoni, described the mountain as a site of exceptional scientific and tourism value due to its unique geological history and the presence of the rare Yoderite mineral.

Solomoni explained that Mount Mautia underwent extraordinary geological transformations that led to the formation of Yoderite, making it one of the most significant geological landmarks for scientific research.

He noted that Yoderite was first discovered at Mount Mautia in 1959 by American geologist Hatten Yoder, after whom the mineral was later named in recognition of his contribution to geological science.

"Following its discovery in Tanzania in 1959, Yoderite was not found anywhere else in the world until 1998, when it was identified in Zimbabwe's Zambezi Belt," Solomoni said.

He emphasized that the discovery placed Tanzania firmly on the global geological map as the first country to identify the rare mineral, enhancing the country's international reputation in geology and mineral research.

According to Solomoni, Mount Mautia has enormous potential to become a leading geological tourism destination, attracting researchers, students, geologists, and tourists from around the world who wish to study the geological processes that shaped the area and led to the formation of the rare mineral.

He added that the geological conditions responsible for the formation of Yoderite are exceptionally rare and unlike those found in most parts of the world, making Mount Mautia a natural laboratory for scientific research and an important asset for the development of geological tourism in Tanzania.

Experts believe that strategic investment in the conservation, research, and promotion of Mount Mautia could position Tanzania among Africa's leading destinations for geological tourism while strengthening the sector's contribution to the national economy.
