TANZANIA SELECTED AS AFRICA’S YOUTH CLIMATE CHANGE TRAINING HUB

By Hadija Omary Mazezele

Tanzania has been selected as a continental training hub for African youth on climate change under the African Union (AU), a move expected to significantly enhance young people’s participation in addressing the impacts of climate change across the continent.

Speaking on the outcomes of the COP30 Conference held in Brazil, the Presidential Adviser on Environmental Issues and Chairperson of the African Group of Negotiators (AGN), Dr Richard Muyungi, said the decision positions Tanzania as the African Union Youth Centre for capacity building and knowledge development on climate change issues.

Dr Muyungi explained that through the centre, youth from various African countries will receive training on climate resilience, innovation of climate solutions, environmental leadership, as well as effective participation in international climate negotiations, including future Conferences of the Parties (COP).

He further noted that this year Tanzania has also been designated as an African regional hub for disaster expertise, aimed at supporting rescue operations and disaster management related to climate change impacts such as floods, droughts and cyclones.

According to Dr Muyungi, the developments are a result of the trust and confidence the international community has built in Tanzania’s contribution to advancing the climate agenda in Africa, alongside the country’s strong stance in COP negotiations that advocates for climate justice for developing nations.

He emphasized that Tanzania’s growing leadership role reflects its commitment to strengthening regional cooperation and empowering young people to become key actors in climate action and sustainable development across Africa.
