Tanzanians across the country are expected to benefit from a more reliable electricity supply following significant progress on the construction of the 400kV Chalinze–Dodoma power transmission line, which has now reached 89 percent completion.

The 345-kilometre transmission project is scheduled for completion on August 21, 2026. Once operational, it will significantly enhance the country's power transmission capacity by delivering electricity from major generation sources to high-demand areas, supporting economic growth and improving the quality of life for millions of Tanzanians.

During an inspection of the project on July 1, 2026, the Minister for Energy, Deogratius Ndejembi, said the investment is a key component of the government's strategy to ensure reliable electricity for households, businesses, industries, and other productive sectors.

He noted that the project will strengthen the National Grid and improve the transmission of electricity generated at the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant, which has an installed capacity of 2,115 megawatts, enabling power to reach consumers and key sectors of the economy more efficiently.

"Reliable electricity means better livelihoods, stronger businesses, uninterrupted industrial production, and improved delivery of essential public services such as healthcare and education," said Ndejembi.

The minister added that the government will continue investing in electricity infrastructure to expand access to affordable and reliable energy, enabling more Tanzanians to increase productivity, create jobs, and improve their living standards.

Meanwhile, TANESCO Managing Director Razalo Twange said continued investment in electricity infrastructure has accelerated the pace of new customer connections, highlighting the growing role of electricity in driving national development.

He revealed that during the 2025/26 financial year, TANESCO connected more than 800,000 new customers, the highest number ever recorded since Tanzania attained independence.

"Every new electricity connection creates new opportunities for businesses, improves children's access to education, strengthens healthcare services, and increases household incomes. That is the true impact of the government's substantial investment in the energy sector," Twange said.

Earlier, Project Manager Newton Mwakifamba confirmed that construction is progressing according to schedule and is expected to be completed by August 21, 2026, in line with the contractual timeline, marking a new era of reliable electricity supply for Tanzanians.
