NDEJEMBI: EACOP OIL PIPELINE CONSTRUCTION REACHES 86%, FIRST OIL SHIPMENT EXPECTED IN JANUARY 2027

The Minister for Energy, Hon. Deogratius Ndejembi, has announced that the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project, which will transport crude oil from Hoima in Uganda to Chongoleani in Tanga, Tanzania, has reached 86% completion and is on track for overall completion by August 2026.

Minister Ndejembi made the remarks on June 29, 2026, while inspecting the progress of the project at Chongoleani in Tanga Region.

He noted that due to the strong pace of implementation, the first shipment of crude oil is expected to be loaded in January 2027, marking a significant milestone for the region’s energy and infrastructure development.

Addressing challenges raised by the contractor, the Minister directed the company responsible for constructing the electricity transmission line powering the project’s facilities to ensure all outstanding works are completed by early August, in line with the contractual timeline.

“The minor challenges observed include delays in electricity connection and incomplete transmission lines. I have instructed the contractor, in collaboration with TANESCO, to ensure all works are completed by the deadline,” he emphasized.

Minister Ndejembi further described the project as one of the flagship infrastructure developments in Tanzania and the East African region, with a total investment value of USD 6.02 billion. The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania has contributed USD 374 million, representing 15 percent of the total shareholders’ contribution.

He also encouraged citizens to fully utilize the economic opportunities generated by the project. During the construction phase alone, the project has created 10,000 jobs, of which 7,500—equivalent to 75 percent—have benefited Tanzanians.

The Tanga Regional Commissioner, Ambassador Dr. Batilda Burian, commended President Samia Suluhu Hassan for her leadership in facilitating the implementation of the project in collaboration with the Government of Uganda. She noted that among the eight regions traversed by the pipeline, Tanga Region has significantly benefited through employment opportunities and broader socio-economic development, particularly for young people.
