Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission (TAEC) has successfully conducted a four-day national training course on radiation safety of x-ray generators and other radiation sources used for medical human imaging. The training took place from Monday, December 1st to Thursday, December 4th, 2025, at TAEC’s Northern Zone offices in Arusha, attracting approximately 50 participants from key sectors across the country.
The course was officially inaugurated and closed by Dr. Denis Mwalongo, Head of TAEC’s Northern Zone, who officiated the opening and closing ceremonies on behalf of TAEC Director General, Prof. Najat Kassim Mohammed.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Mwalongo emphasized the importance of radiation safety in safeguarding workers, patients, the public, and the environment. He noted that the training reflects TAEC’s ongoing commitment to building national expertise in the safe use of nuclear devices.
“This training is not only about compliance; it’s about cultivating a culture of responsibility and awareness among professionals who work with radiation-emitting equipment,” said Dr. Mwalongo.
The course was designed to provide participants with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in radiation safety. Key topics covered included: Introduction to ionizing radiation, Radiation units and quantities, Applications of ionizing radiation, Biological effects of ionizing radiation, Overview of non-ionizing radiation, Regulatory control of radiation sources in Tanzania, International system of radiation protection, Regulatory aspects in occupational exposure, Radioprotection measures for occupational exposure, Optimization of radiation protection in ICT, Facility design and safety features, Quality assurance program for medical exposure, Optimization of radiation protection in pediatric imaging, Radiation protection program development, Radiation detection and measurement, Medical exposure and patient dose management, Optimization of radiation protection in radiography, Radiation protection aspects in digital radiography, and Responsibilities of Radiation Safety Officers (RSOs)
As part of the practical component, participants visited TAEC’s Secondary Standard Dosimetry Laboratory (SSDL) and Dosimetry Laboratory, where they applied radiation safety protocols in real-world settings.
The training aimed to raise awareness, improve technical understanding, and promote safe practices in workplaces where radiation sources are used. By equipping professionals with advanced knowledge and hands-on experience, TAEC continues to strengthen national capacity in radiation safety.
TAEC plays a pivotal role in regulating and promoting the safe use of nuclear technology in Tanzania. Its initiatives are aligned with international standards and contribute to the country’s national development goals, ensuring that nuclear science and technology are applied responsibly and safely in the medical sector.
Delivering the Director General’s message, Dr. Mwalongo conveyed Prof. Najat Kassim Mohammed’s appreciation for the participants’ commitment and TAEC’s vision for the future:
“Radiation safety is central to our mission of protecting lives while advancing medical technology. By investing in training and capacity building, TAEC reaffirms its dedication to ensuring that Tanzania remains at the forefront of safe and responsible nuclear practices,” said Prof. Najat Kassim Mohammed.
The Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission (TAEC) is the national authority mandated to regulate, promote, and ensure the safe use of nuclear technology in Tanzania. Through training, research, and regulatory oversight, TAEC safeguards health, safety, and the environment while supporting the country’s scientific and technological advancement.
