The Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) has continued to fulfil its legal and social responsibility of educating communities living along the natural gas pipeline on issues of safety and protection of national infrastructure.
The ongoing nationwide awareness campaign aims to enhance public understanding of the importance of safeguarding national resources, preventing damage to infrastructure, and strengthening community participation in security matters.
The campaign is being implemented across 140 villages and streets in the regions of Mtwara, Lindi, Pwani and Dar es Salaam.
In Lindi Region, the education initiative was conducted in Kilangala Village through a public meeting organized by TPDC. The event was attended by residents, local leaders, government officials and the Lindi District Commissioner, Ms. Victoria Mwanziva, who served as the guest of honour. She emphasized the crucial role citizens play in protecting national infrastructure.
“When we protect the gas pipeline, we are safeguarding our economy, our security and the future of generations to come. I commend TPDC for its continued efforts to educate the community, and I urge all citizens to actively report and prevent any activities that may endanger this vital infrastructure,” said Ms. Mwanziva.
As part of the campaign, TPDC continues to remind communities to refrain from activities that could pose risks to the gas pipeline, including uncontrolled excavation, farming too close to the infrastructure, or encroaching on the pipeline reserve areas.
The corporation is also encouraging residents to become ambassadors of gas infrastructure protection within their areas and to promptly report any signs or suspicions of tampering or damage.
Speaking during the meeting, TPDC’s Community Development Officer, Mr. Oscar Mwakasege, highlighted the corporation’s commitment to supporting community development through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
“TPDC is dedicated to improving social services through various projects in health, education, water and good governance. We have been implementing projects that directly benefit communities, such as constructing dispensaries, upgrading schools, providing clean water projects and building local government offices. Our goal is to ensure that communities living near gas infrastructure benefit from this national resource,” said Mr. Mwakasege.
In her closing remarks, District Commissioner Mwanziva underscored the importance of the campaign for national development and applauded TPDC for its continued efforts.
“The natural gas project is a key driver of our national economy. It is important for TPDC to continue offering this education regularly to ensure that citizens understand their responsibilities and the consequences of damaging infrastructure. As government, we fully support these efforts,” she said.
