MEDIA EDITORS PRAISE TRA'S 30-YEAR TRANSFORMATION IN TAX ADMINISTRATION

By Staff Reporter, Dar es Salaam.

Media editors in Tanzania have commended the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) for its remarkable transformation over the past three decades, describing the institution as a model of modern tax administration that has strengthened trust with taxpayers and improved revenue collection.

The praise was expressed during a working session between TRA Commissioner General Yusuph Juma Mwenda and media editors in Dar es Salaam ahead of the authority's 30th anniversary celebrations and the Presidential Taxpayer Awards ceremony, scheduled to take place on July 1, 2026, at the Mlimani City Conference Centre.

Speaking during the meeting, Chairman of the Tanzania Editors Forum (TEF), Deodatus Balile, said TRA has undergone significant reforms that have transformed it from an institution once feared by taxpayers into one that prioritizes partnership, transparency, and quality service.

"It is not that we are praising TRA without evidence. I am also a businessman, and I have personally witnessed the tremendous operational reforms that TRA has undertaken in recent years. They now treat taxpayers like a nurse treats a patient, handling them with care to the extent that they hardly feel the pain," Balile said.

He noted that the authority's customer-centred approach has enhanced public confidence, encouraged voluntary tax compliance, and contributed to increased domestic revenue collection, enabling the Government to finance key national development projects.

Balile also applauded Commissioner General Yusuph Juma Mwenda for his leadership, saying his commitment to institutional reforms has significantly improved taxpayer services and strengthened the relationship between TRA and the public.

Other senior editors, including Abdallah Majura and Pascal Mayalla, echoed similar sentiments, stating that public perception of TRA has improved considerably due to enhanced service delivery and greater engagement with taxpayers.

The editors urged the authority to continue investing in taxpayer education programmes for both citizens and journalists to deepen public understanding of tax obligations and promote voluntary compliance, which they said would help broaden the tax base and increase government revenue.

They added that TRA's achievements over the past 30 years demonstrate the institution's successful evolution into a taxpayer-friendly authority that plays a critical role in supporting Tanzania's economic growth and development.

The 30th anniversary celebrations and the Presidential Taxpayer Awards are expected to bring together government leaders, taxpayers, business representatives, and other stakeholders to recognize the vital contribution taxpayers make to Tanzania's development while celebrating TRA's three decades of service in strengthening the country's revenue administration.
