EWURA ISSUES 636 LICENSES FOR FUEL STATIONS AND LPG BUSINESSES

By Alex Sonna – Dodoma

The Government, through the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA), has continued to strengthen the supervision and regulation of petroleum product activities in the country to ensure reliable energy supply, infrastructure safety, and quality services for citizens.

This was stated by the Deogratius Ndejembi while presenting the 2026/2027 national budget speech in Parliament in Dodoma on April 22, 2026.

As of March 2026, EWURA had issued a total of 636 licenses across the petroleum and gas sub-sector. These include fuel stations in both urban and rural areas, fuel storage depots, as well as businesses involved in the distribution and sale of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and lubricants.

Data shows that urban fuel stations received the highest number of licenses, while efforts are also being directed toward rural areas to expand services and increase energy access. This reflects the Government’s strategy to ensure fuel services reach all citizens regardless of location.

To strengthen infrastructure, EWURA also issued 288 construction permits—137 for urban areas and 143 for rural areas. Additional permits covered fuel and gas storage facilities, as well as infrastructure for industrial and mining use.

Alongside licensing, EWURA continued overseeing fuel importation and distribution processes. In quality control inspections, 648 samples were tested, with 608 (93.83%) meeting required standards. A total of 22 stations found selling substandard fuel faced legal action, including closures and fines.

Infrastructure inspections were conducted at 544 fuel stations, where 86.95% met required standards in health, safety, and environmental compliance. Owners of 95 non-compliant stations were directed to make improvements.

Overall, these efforts demonstrate the Government’s commitment to ensuring a safe, efficient petroleum sector that supports economic growth while protecting consumer interests and the environment.
