Tanzania has continued to earn international recognition after the World Bank ranked the country among nations with a high level of maturity in the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the public sector, a milestone that confirms the success of ongoing digital transformation reforms implemented by the Government.
According to the World Bank’s 2025 GovTech Maturity Index (GTMI) Report on the Use of Technology in Government Service Delivery and Citizen Engagement, Tanzania has been classified under Group A – High GovTech Maturity, a category that comprises countries leading globally in leveraging technology to improve government services and enhance citizen participation.
The report assesses the level of ICT maturity in governments across nearly all countries worldwide, focusing on key areas such as policies, legal and regulatory frameworks, guidelines, digital systems, and their practical implementation.
This marks the second time Tanzania has been recognised by the World Bank for achieving significant progress in GovTech maturity. In 2022, the country was similarly acknowledged as one of the top-performing nations globally in digital government reforms.
The 2022 assessment, which covered 198 countries, showed Tanzania making a remarkable leap from position 90 in 2021 to position 26, advancing from Group B to Group A. In Africa, Tanzania ranked second after Mauritius, while emerging as the leading country in East Africa.
Speaking on the achievement, e-Government Authority (e-GA) Director General, Engineer Benedict Ndomba, said the recognition is clear evidence that the country is on the right path in building a robust and inclusive digital government.
He noted that the progress reflects strong political will, sound policies, and sustained investments in digital infrastructure and systems aimed at improving efficiency, transparency, and access to public services for all citizens.
The continued global recognition underscores Tanzania’s growing role as a regional leader in digital governance and its commitment to harnessing technology as a catalyst for socio-economic development.
