By Okuly Julius , Dodoma

The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, has emphasized the importance of judicial independence and the critical role of judges and magistrates in ensuring justice is delivered fairly to all citizens without fear, favor, or corruption.

President Samia made the remarks on January 13, 2026, while addressing the Annual General Meeting of the Tanzania Magistrates and Judges Association (TMJA), held at the Judiciary Headquarters in Dodoma.

She stated that an independent, competent, and ethical Judiciary is a key pillar of good governance and a foundation for sustainable national development. The President commended judges and magistrates for their dedication and service to the public, noting that their responsibilities are demanding and require professionalism, integrity, patience, wisdom, and courage in upholding justice impartially.

President Samia noted that the Sixth Phase Government continues to implement various measures to strengthen the Judiciary, including improving infrastructure, increasing human resources, enhancing staff welfare, and expanding the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to fast-track the delivery of justice.

She further highlighted the Judiciary’s crucial role in the implementation of the National Development Vision 2025–2050, particularly given the increasing collaboration between the Government and the private sector. She emphasized that commercial, tax, and investment-related disputes require a strong and independent Judiciary capable of protecting citizens’ rights and safeguarding national interests.

Addressing issues related to the Judiciary’s budget and the welfare of judges and magistrates, President Samia stated that the Government will continue to improve salaries and working conditions in line with the country’s economic capacity. She added that challenges presented during the meeting, including land disputes and proposed legal reforms, have been received and will be addressed progressively as resources allow.

The President also stressed that judges and magistrates have a constitutional and moral obligation to administer justice in accordance with the Constitution, laws, and ethical standards, without fear, favoritism, or prejudice, noting that the Judiciary plays a vital role in safeguarding peace, security, and national stability.

Speaking at the meeting, the Chief Justice of Tanzania, Prof. George Mcheche Masaju, said that President Samia’s presence at the gathering demonstrates the Government’s strong commitment to upholding judicial independence and strengthening the justice delivery system. He added that ongoing improvements in court buildings, working tools, human resources, and ICT systems will enhance efficiency in the administration of justice.

The TMJA Annual General Meeting 2026 brought together judges and magistrates from all levels across the country to deliberate on professional, ethical, and institutional matters aimed at strengthening the Judiciary and its contribution to national development.
