Hanang, Manyara
The Government is set to deploy advanced technology to help contain the raging wildfire in the Hanang Natural Forest Reserve, as the blaze continues to spread towards the upper zones of Mount Hanang.
Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr. Ashatu Kijaji, made the announcement today during her inspection tour to assess the damage caused by the fire, which broke out on December 3, 2025, and has continued to advance despite ongoing efforts to put it out.
Dr. Kijaji said that although significant efforts have been made on the ground, the fire remains aggressive, prompting the Government to move swiftly to dispatch modern equipment to stop it from spreading further and causing extensive destruction to the natural forest.
“So far, the fire has destroyed 228.5 acres. I commend the District Government for the commendable work they have done in the initial stages. However, due to the magnitude of the challenge, the Government is taking more urgent and advanced measures,” she stated.
Describing the current situation, Dr. Kijaji noted, “This fire is now a national disaster. We cannot allow it to continue destroying our natural vegetation, water sources, and environment. We have reached a point where we must say enough is enough.”
As part of the immediate measures, the Minister announced that starting this evening, the Government will deploy drones to capture aerial images and gather accurate information on the fire's direction—data that will enable experts to design a strategic containment plan before the flames approach human settlements.
She also directed district leaders to organize youth volunteers involved in firefighting across the surrounding villages to establish firebreaks between the mountain and residential areas to prevent the fire from reaching community settlements.
Hanang District Commissioner, Almishi Hazali, reported that 387 youths are actively participating in firefighting efforts, with the response being strengthened as the fire continues to spread.
Hanang Member of Parliament, Asia Halamga, thanked the Government for its swift intervention and commended the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism for deploying experts and essential support for the young people battling the blaze.
