The Minister of Minerals, Hon. Anthony Mavunde, has urged the contractor in charge of building the Tanzania Gemological Centre (TGC) to complete the construction of the gem value addition training center promptly by increasing workforce and working around the clock to finish the project in the shortest possible time.
Minister Mavunde made the remarks today, December 12, 2025, in Arusha during an inspection visit to the project, which has officially begun. In his directives, he instructed the contractor to ensure quality construction that meets all specifications outlined in the contract.
He explained that the Sixth Phase Government, led by President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, is implementing strategies across the entire gem value addition chain in accordance with the 2009 Minerals Policy.
Minister Mavunde also emphasized that the commencement of this construction is part of executing directives given by President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan during her address to the 13th Parliament in Dodoma.
He highlighted that the completion of this center will bring multiple benefits, including an increase in student enrollment, a growth in the number of experts in gem value addition, the creation of employment opportunities for youth and gemstone traders, and a reduction in the export of unprocessed gems, thereby boosting national revenue.
On his part, the Arusha District Commissioner, Hon. Joseph Mkude, pledged to continue monitoring the construction progress to ensure it is completed as the Government intends.
He added that the completion of this center will be a significant government investment, particularly in the mining sector in Arusha region.
Earlier, providing a project progress report, the TGC Director, Engineer Ally Maganga, stated that the construction of the twin eight-story buildings will cost TZS 33 billion, and its completion will provide many young people with employment opportunities through skills in gem value addition.
Meanwhile, the Project Manager, Engineer Robert Lubuva, promised that the contractors will enhance manpower and equipment to ensure the project is completed on time and serves Tanzanians effectively.
