Lilongwe, Malawi
Benjamin Mkapa Hospital (BMH) has opened a new chapter in expanding cooperation with the Government of Malawi, through the Ministry of Health, in the areas of advanced specialized healthcare, professional training and research, with the aim of benefiting citizens of both countries.
This follows preliminary discussions held between a delegation of BMH specialists led by the Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Abel Makubi, and the Principal Secretary of Malawi’s Ministry of Health, Dr. Dan Namarika. The discussions were held under the coordination of the Ambassador of the United Republic of Tanzania to Malawi, H.E. Agnes Kayora.
During their visit, the BMH delegation toured four major referral hospitals in Malawi—Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, Zomba Central Hospital and Mzuzu Central Hospital—before holding official talks with the Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Dan Namarika.
In the bilateral discussions, BMH committed to supporting medical tourism, capacity building for health professionals through training programs, medical outreach camps, and collaboration in experience sharing and research. The leadership of Malawi’s Ministry of Health expressed strong interest in the Government of Tanzania’s investment in specialized healthcare services, particularly in kidney transplantation, advanced diagnostic imaging, cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, urology, as well as knee and hip replacement surgeries.
The Ministry further pledged to visit Benjamin Mkapa Hospital next year to gain practical experience in these specialized services, as well as in hospital management systems and the procurement and availability of medicines and medical equipment.
