The Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Adolf Mkenda, together with the Deputy Minister, Hon. Wanu Hafidh Ameir, has led ministry experts and the Committee of the Samia Extended Scholarship DS/AI+ Programme in reviewing the progress of the initiative.
The programme aims to sponsor 50 young Tanzanians from Mainland and Zanzibar to pursue studies at top global universities in the fields of Data Science, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computational Science for the 2025/2027 academic cycle.
Currently, the selected candidates are undergoing preparatory training at the Knowledge Camp hosted at the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) in Arusha.
During the discussions, Prof. Mkenda expressed satisfaction with the work being undertaken by the Programme Committee, chaired by Prof. Makenya Maboko, in collaboration with ministry leaders and technical experts. He stated that the progress made reflects the Government’s commitment to preparing a new generation of highly skilled scientists and technologists to accelerate national development.
Deputy Minister Wanu Hafidh Ameir urged committee members, ministry officials and institutions to work closely and ensure full implementation of the Minister’s directives. She emphasised the importance of rigorous follow-up to achieve the programme’s intended outcomes.
The Programme Adviser and Director General of the Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH), Dr. Amos Nungu, thanked the Government for establishing this strategic initiative. He assured that COSTECH will continue working with all stakeholders to ensure the programme aligns with national expectations.
This development forms part of the Government’s efforts to fulfil President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s pledge—made during her address to the National Assembly—to expand opportunities for Tanzanian youth to study cutting-edge technologies abroad, strengthen the national economy and secure the future of the next generation.
