The Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr Ashatu Kijaji, has commended the Tanzania Forestry Research Institute (TAFORI) for its contribution to research that supports the development of Tanzania’s forestry and beekeeping sectors. She has also urged the institute to seize carbon-trading opportunities as a new source of revenue for both TAFORI and the nation.

Dr Kijaji made the remarks today, July 7, 2026, during her visit to TAFORI Headquarters in Morogoro, where she received a briefing on the institute’s ongoing research activities and future direction during a meeting with its management. The visit also included a tree-planting exercise involving rare indigenous tree species that the institute has been researching.

The Minister was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr Hassan Abbas; the Acting Director of the Forestry and Beekeeping Department, Daniel Charles Pancras; the Director of Administration and Human Resources Management, Benard Marcelline; and the Acting Director of the Communication Unit, Emmanuel Buholelwa.

The leaders planted Mvule (Milicia excelsa), Mkongo (Afzelia quanzensis) and Mkurungu (Pterocarpus tinctorius) trees at TAFORI Headquarters as part of efforts to promote the conservation of important indigenous tree species in the country.

Addressing TAFORI management, Dr Kijaji said the time had come for the institute to closely explore ways of fully participating in carbon-trading opportunities through its research trials.

“TAFORI should explore how it can benefit from carbon trading. This is an important opportunity to increase revenue for the institute and the Government as a whole,” she said.

The Minister also stressed the need to speed up improvements to research laboratory infrastructure, ensuring that the laboratories are completed and equipped with modern facilities capable of supporting internationally competitive scientific research in forestry and beekeeping.

“We must mobilise funds so that the laboratory can be completed on time. We should ensure our laboratory is completed so that all important scientific activities can be carried out here in the country. We have the experts,” she emphasised.

Earlier, TAFORI Director General, Dr Revocatus Mushumbusi, presented the institute’s achievements and challenges in the various research programmes being implemented to advance the forestry and beekeeping sectors.

Dr Kijaji further urged TAFORI employees to continue carrying out their duties professionally and responsibly so that the institute’s research continues to provide solutions to challenges facing the forestry and beekeeping sectors, while contributing to the implementation of Tanzania’s National Development Vision 2050.
