CHRAGG COMMENDED, URGED TO STRENGTHEN PUBLIC AWARENESS OF RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Dar es Salaam📍

Deputy Minister for Constitution and Legal Affairs, Zainabu Katimba, has urged the Commission for Human Rights and Good Governance (CHRAGG) to continue educating Tanzanians about both their rights and responsibilities, stressing that human rights cannot be separated from civic accountability.

Katimba made the remarks on July 1, 2026, during her visit to the CHRAGG exhibition booth at the ongoing Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (Sabasaba) in Dar es Salaam.

She emphasized that every Tanzanian visiting the booth should receive education not only on human rights but also on their constitutional responsibilities under the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania.

"Our Constitution guarantees the protection of human rights, but Articles 25 to 28 also clearly state that every citizen has a duty to fulfill their responsibilities for the benefit of the nation," Katimba said.

Addressing the issue of public awareness, the Deputy Minister noted that many citizens are more familiar with their rights than with their responsibilities, a situation she said can contribute to unnecessary conflicts and violations of the law.

"People are not being adequately educated that their human rights go hand in hand with their civic responsibilities. When you neglect your duties as a citizen, you may also undermine the protection of your own rights," she emphasized.

Katimba also cited Article 27 of the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania, which requires every citizen to participate in safeguarding the nation and promoting peace, unity, solidarity, and national development.
