DODOMA RESIDENTS CRY OUT OVER WATER SHORTAGE, URGE GOVERNMENT TO ACT

By Staff Reporter, Dodoma.

Residents of Chimalaa Street in Ntyuka Ward, Dodoma City, have appealed to the Government to urgently address the long standing shortage of clean and safe water, saying they are forced to share the same water sources with livestock, exposing them to serious health risks.

Speaking to journalists, residents said they have endured years of hardship due to unreliable water supply, despite repeated promises from leaders during election campaigns.

One of the residents, Eunice Chiwanga, said the water crisis has become unbearable and called on the Government to intervene.

She appealed to the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania under President Samia Suluhu Hassan, their Member of Parliament, and other leaders to help residents of Chimalaa access clean water.

According to Chiwanga, the community relies on a single water source that is also used by livestock, while wild animals such as hyenas drink from it at night.

She added that people use the same water for bathing, washing clothes, and other domestic purposes, making it unsafe for human consumption.

Another resident, Isabela Nhambi, described the water shortage as a long-standing burden, accusing political leaders of making repeated promises during election campaigns without delivering lasting solutions.

She said residents are tired of empty promises and only want reliable access to clean and safe water. She noted that the current situation forces families to use water that is also consumed by animals, posing significant health concerns.

Meanwhile, Ritha Mbilinyi said many residents frequently suffer from illnesses believed to be linked to the use of contaminated water.

She explained that whenever the available water source dries up, residents are forced to travel long distances to Makulu in search of water, making life even more difficult for families.

Commenting on the situation, Theobalt Maina, Councillor for Makulu Ward, said several areas in neighboring Ntyuka Ward including Bwawani, Chimalaa, and Chidachi streets are among the worst affected by the water shortage.

He called on the Minister for Water, Jumaa Aweso, to visit the area and witness the situation firsthand. Maina urged the Government to drill boreholes, construct water storage tanks, and expand the water distribution network to serve the affected communities.

The councillor also noted that Minister Aweso recently allocated TSh 500 million to address water shortages in Iringa and appealed for similar support to be extended to Ntyuka Ward.

"It is unacceptable that Ntyuka Ward, located only about five kilometres from Dodoma city centre and the country's administrative capital, continues to face such severe water shortages while national leaders are based here," Maina said.

Residents expressed hope that the Government will take immediate action to ensure they have access to clean and safe water, emphasizing that access to safe water is a fundamental right for every citizen.
