KINYEREZI 1 EXTENSION POWER SUBSTATION EXPANSION COMPLETED – DEPUTY MINISTER SALOME

By Our Correspondent, Dar es Salaam

Deputy Minister for Energy, Salome Makamba, has announced the completion of the expansion project for the Kinyerezi 1 Extension Power Receiving and Step-Down Substation, including the installation of a 175 MVA transformer.

She said the development marks a significant milestone in strengthening the reliability of electricity supply in Dar es Salaam, particularly in the rapidly growing areas of Mbagala and Gongo la Mboto, which have been experiencing frequent power interruptions due to population growth and rising economic activities.

Deputy Minister Salome made the remarks on December 11, 2025, during her inspection tour of the Kinyerezi I and II power plants, as well as Ubungo I, II and III, noting that the system has already entered the testing phase.

“We are very grateful to President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan for the substantial investment. The transformers have been installed, testing is underway, and residents of Gongo la Mboto and Mbagala can now expect a much more reliable power supply,” she said.

For his part, TANESCO Managing Director, Lazaro Twange, said the utility continues to upgrade its infrastructure to meet the increasing electricity demand.

He explained that a 175 MVA transformer has been installed at the Kinyerezi area, while Gongo la Mboto and Mbagala have been equipped with a 120 MVA transformer to address the rising consumption needs.

Twange emphasized that Dar es Salaam’s population continues to grow rapidly, making regular upgrades to power infrastructure essential.

“The objective of the Kinyerezi 1 Extension project was to boost the capacity to distribute generated electricity efficiently to our customers,” he noted.
