Dodoma Municipal District Commissioner, Hon. Jabir Shekimweri, has called on various development stakeholders, including the private sector, organizations and business community, to continue partnering with Habitat for Humanity Tanzania to improve housing conditions for low-income families and other vulnerable groups.
Shekimweri made the call in Dodoma during a handover ceremony for an affordable house constructed by Habitat for Humanity Tanzania in Ng’ong’ona Ward and handed over to a family of orphaned children who had previously been living in difficult and unsafe conditions.
He said the Government recognizes the important contribution made by organizations and development partners in addressing challenges facing communities, emphasizing that such partnerships are essential in ensuring that more people have access to decent and safe housing.
“I commend Habitat for Humanity for the work it is doing. It is important for other stakeholders to continue partnering with the organization so that more families in need can be supported and their living conditions improved,” Shekimweri said.
He said the Government cannot address all development challenges on its own, making collaboration with the private sector, organizations and other institutions essential in accelerating the implementation of development projects.
Speaking at the event, Habitat for Humanity Tanzania National Director Magdalena George said the organization believes that every person deserves to live in a decent, safe and dignified home.
She said housing construction is only one part of the organization's work, explaining that Habitat for Humanity Tanzania also implements projects focusing on water, sanitation, improved toilets and economic empowerment.
George said the organization also works closely with the Government to ensure beneficiaries of housing projects obtain proper documentation proving legal ownership of their homes, giving families greater security and protecting their property rights.
She explained that a decent home can contribute significantly to the development of a family by providing a safe environment for children to pursue education, improving household security and enabling people to live with dignity.
“We know that building a house is a major undertaking, but we also look at ways of empowering people to improve their homes. We want everyone to have a safe and decent place to live,” Magdalena said.
She added that Habitat for Humanity Tanzania is also exploring ways of economically empowering communities through income-generating activities so that beneficiaries can continue improving their livelihoods and homes.
According to George, addressing the shortage of affordable housing requires broader cooperation between the Government, private sector, financial institutions, civil society organizations and other development partners.
Meanwhile, Veronica, a sister in the family of children who benefited from the housing project, said receiving the house had brought comfort, security and new hope to the family after living for a long time in difficult conditions.
Veronica said the new home had given the family an opportunity to live in peace and dignity, describing the support from Habitat for Humanity Tanzania and other stakeholders as a valuable gift to the family.
“We sincerely thank Habitat for Humanity Tanzania for enabling us to have a decent and safe home. This support has brought comfort, security and new hope into our lives. To us, this house is not just a place to live; it is a valuable gift that has given us an opportunity to live with dignity and peace,” Veronica said.
She expressed appreciation to Habitat for Humanity Tanzania, the Government and other stakeholders who contributed to ensuring that the house was completed and handed over to the family.
Veronica also thanked the organization for supporting families in need and urged other stakeholders to continue supporting similar initiatives aimed at improving the lives of vulnerable people.
“We thank you for your love and care for families in need. May God bless you greatly for changing our lives and giving us new hope,” she said.
The handover of the house has highlighted the importance of continued collaboration between the Government, Habitat for Humanity Tanzania and other stakeholders in addressing housing challenges, particularly among low-income families and vulnerable groups.
