Tsh9 Billion Water Project to Benefit 437,200 Residents in Dodoma

By Okuly Julius – OKULY BLOG, Dodoma

A five-year water project worth Sh9 billion is expected to benefit approximately 437,200 residents of Dodoma City and parts of Bahi District by improving water services, reducing water losses, and strengthening the efficiency of institutions responsible for water supply.

The project will also focus on improving access to safe and reliable water, increasing the efficiency of water distribution systems, restoring the capacity of existing infrastructure, and strengthening the skills and capacity of professionals and institutions involved in water service management.

Speaking on August 21, 2026, in Bahi District, Dodoma Region, during the launch of construction works for a pilot system, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Water, Engineer Mwajuma Waziri, said the project is being implemented with funding from the Government of Korea through the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).

She said the project will not focus solely on constructing new infrastructure but will also improve the utilization and performance of existing infrastructure to ensure that citizens receive efficient and sustainable water services.

“This project will benefit residents of Dodoma City and parts of Bahi District. The value of the project should not be measured only by the amount of money invested, but also by the benefits it will bring to citizens and the ability of these services to continue being delivered efficiently over the long term,” Engineer Mwajuma said.

Engineer Mwajuma said the Government continues to prioritize improving the efficiency of water services and reducing water losses. She explained that water produced but not delivered to consumers or not properly billed represents a loss to water service providers and to the nation as a whole.

She added that the Government will continue implementing policies and strategies aimed at ensuring that water resources are used efficiently, while water authorities strengthen their capacity to provide sustainable services to citizens.

According to the Permanent Secretary, the project will also provide an opportunity to gain knowledge and experience that can be applied in other parts of the country, particularly in improving service efficiency and reducing water losses.

Meanwhile, the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Tanzania, Eunju Ahn, said the project is expected to serve as a model for improving water management in Tanzania. It will also support the Ministry of Water, the Dodoma Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (DUWASA), and the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA) in strengthening national strategies for the maintenance and management of water infrastructure.

She said development cooperation between Korea and Tanzania reached approximately US$875 million between 1987 and 2024, demonstrating the continued strengthening of development relations between the two countries.

“The project aims to improve access to clean and safe water, reduce non-revenue water losses, and strengthen water distribution and management systems,” Ambassador Ahn said.

Earlier, the Executive Director of DUWASA, Engineer Aron Joseph, said the project will also focus on restoring and improving the efficiency of existing infrastructure rather than relying solely on the construction of new facilities.

He said this approach will help ensure that existing infrastructure operates more efficiently while increasing DUWASA’s capacity to provide reliable water services to residents.
