The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting sustainable urban growth while increasing investment in social services and modern urban infrastructure across the country.
The commitment was announced by the Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister's Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (PMO-RALG), Sospeter Mtwale, during the 80th United Nations Meeting on the Review of the New Urban Agenda, held on July 16–17, 2026, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York
Addressing the meeting, Mtwale said the Government will continue allocating resources to support urban development and will work closely with development partners to mobilize additional financing for the construction of modern cities and the improvement of essential public services.
He also highlighted Tanzania's ongoing efforts to address climate change, disaster risks, and environmental pollution in urban areas.
Mtwale noted that the Government is implementing various initiatives to make cities more resilient to floods and other natural disasters, citing the Msimbazi Basin Development under the Dar es Salaam Metropolitan Development Project (DMDP) as one of the flagship interventions aimed at improving urban resilience.
Meanwhile, the Director of Infrastructure at PMO-RALG, Engineer Gilbert Mwoga, who also attended the meeting, said the forum was convened to review progress in accelerating the implementation of the New Urban Agenda, while discussing challenges related to sustainable housing and the development of future cities.
Mwoga explained that PMO-RALG has continued to invest in urban infrastructure, including roads, public markets, and bus terminals, to improve service delivery and support orderly urbanization.
He said the infrastructure projects are being implemented through the Dar es Salaam Metropolitan Development Project (DMDP), the TACTIC Programme, and the Government's national budget. The initiatives currently cover the four municipal councils and the Dar es Salaam City Council under DMDP, while the TACTIC Programme is being implemented in five cities, 18 municipalities, and 12 town councils across the country.
Mwoga added that priorities for urban development are guided by population size and the rapid rate of urban population growth, based on data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
