TANZANIA A GLOBAL MODEL OF PEACE AND UNITY – GUTERRES

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has described Tanzania as a global reference point for peace, unity and social cohesion, both in Africa and beyond.

Mr Guterres made the remarks on December 14, 2025, while receiving a Special Envoy from Tanzania bearing a message from President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan.

He said Tanzania’s long-standing image as a peaceful and united nation was put to the test during the recent General Election held on October 29, 2025, noting that the country managed to overcome the challenge successfully.

“Tanzania has continued to stand as an important reference for peace and social cohesion in Africa and across the world,” said Mr Guterres, adding that the United Nations would like to see the country maintain its unity and continue serving as a positive example to other nations.

The Special Envoy, led by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Kombo, conveyed President Samia’s message and greetings to the UN Secretary-General.

Mr Guterres stressed the importance of meaningful, inclusive and participatory national dialogue as a key approach to addressing the root causes of the incidents of violence reported during the October 29 election, as well as identifying lasting solutions to prevent their recurrence.

Furthermore, he pledged the United Nations’ full support before, during and after the completion of the work of the Commission of Inquiry established in Tanzania to investigate the reported incidents.

The UN Secretary-General reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to continue working closely with Tanzania in strengthening peace, democratic governance and social cohesion, in line with the aspirations of the Tanzanian people and the international community.
